Chekhov with a Twist: The Proposal Lights Up the Surat Stage

Hello Fitness Magazine

Surat witnessed a laughter riot on the evening of 7th March at 7:30 PM as a modern adaptation of Anton Chekhov's popular one-act play The Proposal was staged at Sky Altitude, 6th Floor Cannon Street One, opposite Agam Arcade. This refreshing take on the Russian classic was written by Gayatri Jhaveri and Huseini Dawawala, with direction by Dawawala himself.

Presented by Thetrix Entertainment and DRP Entertainment, with special support from Pratima Devnani, the event brought theatre lovers from across the city under one roof. Sky Altitude was the venue partner, with The Real Estate Hub, Uplifted, and Hello Fitness coming on board as the real estate, education, and magazine partners, respectively.

Originally known for its sharp satire and just three characters, this version of The Proposal went beyond the script. More characters, more drama, and a uniquely Indian flavour made the play stand out. The cast, including Sonal Singh, Devashreee Vora, Sanjeet Dhuri, Rajan Sarathuya, Harsh Joshi, Dev Joshi, Harsh Kanojiya, Shivani Jhaveri and Dinky Shah, brought colourful chaos to the stage that the audience lapped up with delight.

The play kept the essence of Chekhovian humour but added layers that made it more relatable. There were unexpected jumps into horror, sudden bursts of desi-style arguments, and clever jabs at the everyday problems we all know too well. What could have been just a dramatic proposal turned into a hilarious battlefield of misunderstandings, inflated egos and over-the-top reactions.

The audience responded with constant laughter, claps, and moments of surprise. The modern elements didn't feel forced. Instead, they fit in smoothly with the original plot, giving the play a fresh energy. Whether it was a loud neighbour barging in at the wrong time or the never-ending family interference, every scene found its mark.

What made the evening even more special was the interaction after the play. The audience stayed back to engage with the director and cast, discussing the modernization of the classic and appreciating the risks the creators took.

As the show ended, the atmosphere was still buzzing. People stayed back to meet the actors, exchange views, click pictures, and relive the funniest moments. It was more than just a performance—it felt like a gathering of people united by laughter.

The staging of The Proposal proved that classics don't have to stay frozen in time. With the right mix of humour, creativity, and a pinch of desi masala, they can speak to audiences in new and exciting ways. And judging by the audience's response, this one spoke loud and clear.
