Surat— Siachen, a gripping Hindi play written by Aditya Rawal and directed by theatre veteran Makarand Deshpande, captivated audiences at the Sanjeev Kumar Auditorium. Presented by DRP Entertainment in association with Viral Sheth, Chintan Shah, and Naman Brahmbhatt, the performance drew a packed house and ended with a standing ovation.
A Story That Demands to Be Told
The play tells the fictional yet deeply human story of a group of Indian soldiers stranded on the Siachen Glacier after a catastrophic blizzard severs all contact with their base. Cut off in one of the world’s most inhospitable terrains, they face an invisible enemy far deadlier than bullets — the relentless cold, isolation, and the slow erosion of hope.
What makes Siachen so compelling is its refusal to indulge in patriotic platitudes. Instead, it poses uncomfortable but necessary questions: why are men stationed here decades after a ceasefire? Is the cost — in lives, sanity, and human potential — worth it? Through these questions, the play explores themes of survival, duty versus belief, and the camaraderie that keeps people going when the odds are impossible.
Crafted with Precision of Emotion
Rawal’s writing gives each soldier a layered personality. They are no longer faceless men in uniform, but individuals grappling with fear, loyalty, and the absurdity of their mission. Deshpande’s direction heightens these tensions, using silences as effectively as dialogue to make the audience feel the soldiers’ suspended state between hope and hopelessness.
One of the standout elements of the production was its masterful use of lighting. Cold blue tones and stark whites recreated the glacial chill, while sudden fades to black intensified the sense of isolation. Spotlights drew focus to emotional peaks, turning the lighting design into a silent narrator of its own. The result was a visceral experience where the audience could almost feel the frostbite and loneliness creeping in.
Striking a Chord with Audience
The relevance of Siachen was not lost on its viewers. In today’s climate, where conversations around nationalism, borders, and military sacrifice are as charged as ever, the play’s message hit home. Many audience members described it as both moving and thought-provoking, praising its honesty in portraying soldiers not just as defenders of the nation, but as human beings enduring extraordinary hardship.
The evening concluded with thunderous applause, the kind that comes not only from appreciation for a performance but from recognition of a truth well told. Siachen reminded Surat’s theatre-goers that art, when done right, is not just entertainment — it’s an invitation to think, to question, and to feel.
